Insight from Brazil: integrating RSS with certification standards

Published 21 Oct 2015

The Responsible Sourcing from Smallholders (RSS) framework can be used by smallholders to improve farming practices in situations where they cannot afford certification or to bring their practices closer to the levels required. But RSS can also be used to help smallholders go through the process of reaching standards of a particular certification scheme. SHARP has been involved in a project in Brazil to test how RSS could be used for implementing standards of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) among small-scale soybean producers.

Lessons from PES: pros and cons of smallholder incentives

Published 20 Oct 2015

Earlier this year, SHARP published a study of Payments for Ecosystem Services projects that involve smallholder farmers in tropical forested areas, based on a wide-ranging literature review by Helen Cross and Willie McGhee. We have now added to the SHARP website a directory of the 28 projects reviewed in the study, which we hope will be a useful resource. Click here to see the PES project directory. The SHARP secretariat also took the opportunity to contact a range of practitioners and researchers for their insights into smallholder-oriented PES projects. Here we report the results.

Survey identifies obstacles and opportunities to smallholder finance in Latin America

Published 20 Aug 2015

The contentious reputation of palm oil, particularly in relation to land and labour conflicts, deforestation and weak governance, is creating the largest barrier to investment in the sector, a SHARP-commissioned study has found. Investors say they are looking for proof of sustainability via certification, something which many smallholders cannot afford or lack the technical capacity to implement. This may hinder access to finance and investment to improve sustainability in small-scale oil palm cultivation.

Lessons learned from smallholder payment schemes

Published 21 Apr 2015

Using cash payments to incentivise smallholders to protect forests can create risk, and it may be more effective to provide incentives and compensation in the form of secure land tenure, enterprise support and other non-cash inducements. This is one of the findings of a review commissioned by SHARP to investigate factors that affect the long-term success of projects targeted at encouraging smallholders and other community members to minimise deforestation.
