Mobile App and Dashboard for Simplified HCV Approach tested in the field

Published 29 Aug 2017

This is a risk-based approach, with different procedures required depending on the risk of damage to HCVs. Smallholder Group Managers (GMs) complete basic HCV surveys themselves using the mobile app, avoiding the expense and technical requirement for contracting independent assessors. Based on the results of the surveys, the risk of damaging HCVs is determined automatically by the app (based on the presence of any potential HCV habitat types, potential overlapping land use claims) and additional independent review or 3rd party HCV assessment are triggered in higher risk situations. To help GMs to provide the required outputs to comply with certification standard, a mobile application and web dashboard has been developed. The app and dashboard supplement the written manuals intended to guide GMs through the series of phases which comprise the approach.

P&G management team get ‘hands-on’ experience with smallholders in Malaysia

Published 07 Aug 2017

The team visited the P&G Pilot Project, which is being implemented by Proforest Malaysia in partnership with the SHARP Secretariat. This is part of the smallholder initiative launched by P&G in 2016 to work with the independent smallholders to ensure compliance with P&G’s responsible sourcing commitments in its palm oil supply chain. The P&G team was led by the Vice President for P&G Chemicals (Jack Ryan) along with their EurAsia Regional Manager (Dan Cooper), Supply Network Leader (Girish Deshpand) and Palm Sustainability Project Manager (Mohd Suffian Muhili). The event was jointly organized by P&G Chemicals, oil palm fruit dealer Naajihin Enterprise, WildAsia and Proforest. The P&G delegation was given the opportunity to harvest ripe oil palm fresh fruit buncesh (FFB) from the farm, loading it on the truck, grading the FFB, observing the operations in the dealer’s collection centre and harvesting some pineapples, which some smallholders interplant with palm in the early years of the rotation. They were able to interact with the independent smallholders and dealers running the collection centres. The delegation was very pleased to gain a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the field for sustainable smallholder oil palm production.
