Prácticas precautorias y aplicación móvil ayudan a pequeños agricultores hondureños a manejar AVC

En Honduras, la aplicación de las herramientas y enfoques de SHARP está tomando impulso. El punto focal regional de SHARP, Proforest, está trabajando con la empresa de aceite de palma Jaremar y la asociación de pequeños agricultores UNPALA en el uso del marco RSS como un enfoque paso a paso para la certificación de pequeños agricultores. Un aspecto clave de este trabajo es la ampliación de la aplicación del enfoque de prácticas precautorias simplificadas para la gestión de los AVC por los pequeños agricultores, que ha incluido pruebas de campo recientes del prototipo de una aplicación para apoyar a Gestores de Grupo a entender y evaluar los riesgos para los AVC.

Precautionary practices and mobile app help Honduran smallholders manage HCVs

In Honduras, application of SHARP tools and approaches is gathering pace. SHARP’s regional focal point, Proforest is working with palm oil company Jaremar and smallholder association UNPALA using the RSS framework as a step-wise approach to smallholder certification. A key aspect of this work is scaling up the application of the simplified precautionary practices approach for smallholder management of HCVs, which has included recent field testing of a prototype app to help group managers understand and assess risks to HCVs.

Launch of the new 2017 SAN standard

Rainforest Alliance (RA) and The Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) have launched a revised version of the SAN certification standard for 2017. One of the key changes is the introduction of a Continuous Improvement Framework, which recognises that "...sustainability is a path, a process over time, rather than a final or fixed destination".

Smallholder development as the best route for palm oil in Africa?

The role of smallholders featured heavily in last month’s Guardian expert panel discussion on oil palm development in Africa. Abraham Baffoe, Africa Regional Director for SHARP partner Proforest, was on the panel, which was supported by the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil. Amongst the panel members and the audience, who were invited to contribute questions, there was a strong interest in ensuring local communities and smallholders benefit from the industry. And many agreed with Abraham’s concluding statement that the preferable form of palm oil development for Africa would be through smallholder production.

SHARP event at RSPO RT in Bangkok

At the recent RSPO RT 14 SHARP Partners Olam, Sime Darby and Proforest co-hosted a side event to present and publicise SHARP tools, and discuss the business case for their use in Palm Oil smallholder engagement. The SHARP Secretariat presented the RSS framework and field guides. Field experience from Honduras and plans for scale up in Indonesia were discussed by SHARP Regional Focal Points SNV and Proforest. The event was well attended, with representatives from several major palm oil production and trading companies and end users who contributed questions and comments from the floor.
